QUICKIE PRODUCTIVITY TIP

STAND WHILE TAKING YOUR PHONE CALLS

A simple but effective tip to get on and off the phone.
When your phone rings and you take the call, stand up while speaking to the other party.
Why?

  1. It's an interuption any way you look at it, and despite what some may say, you simply cannot multi-task, at least to the extent that you probably need to do so (writing code, plotting business development strategy, etc. AND talking on the phone.... I know I can't do it).
  2. You'll give the person calling you your undivided attention, which they'll appreciate.
  3. Because you're focused on the one task, you'll subconciously give it your full attention and look to finish it immediately (read, "Sure I can take your call, what do you need from me? What are the details? Sure, let me get working on that right away and I'll get back to you.")

I recently started this practice again and sure enough, my phone time is actually down (I'm cutting right to the chase and getting to the reason for the call) and I'm not making (as many) mistakes like I used to.

I'd love to take credit for this one but I'm sure I read it in a book or magazine article long ago.... Give it a try!
