How To Retrieve Your Data From a Dead Computer

Hi this is Rich and today I'd like to share an ugly, but probably common scenario, let's see if you've ever felt my pain:
You go to turn on your computer and... nothing. It's just dead. This happened to me recently when my Windows server would actually turn on but nothing appeared on screen - I got a black screen and Windows would never start up. So I was dead in the water.
Now I needed data and files on that computer for a meeting and there's never a good time for your computer to crash.... So what do you do? Well if you're like me - I'm an independent contractor - I'm a one person shop and I have to wear all of the hats, so it was on me to fix the computer or at least recover my data.
So how do you get stuff out of a dead computer?
Well, give one of these a try...
This is called a "SATA Drive Enclosure"; and the process is pretty simple, just follow the instructions.
In a nutshell, you take the case off of your computer and remove the hard drive, then plug your hard drive into the enclosure case. That case has a USB connection so then it works like one of those little USB thumb drives, just plug it into any computer and if your data's available, it'll show up.
So if your hard drive hasn't failed, you should at least have access to your files using a kit like this.
You'll still need to fix your computer but at least you can get to your files and data and business keeps rolling along.
These things run from 20 to 40 bucks online and if you don't already own one you should order one today, because if your business runs on what you have on your hard drive, you can't afford to be without one of these drive enclosures. I also did a little digging and it turns out that the big-retail-computer stores will mark these things up ridiculously high, so unless you're stuck you'll probably be OK ordering one of these kits online and save a few bucks even after shipping.
